Permanent Resident, Green Card And Alien Card Number

This receipt number is a unique 13-character identifier that USCIS provides for each application or petition it receives, and it’s used to identify and track its cases. The receipt number consists of three letters followed by 10 numbers. For example, the letters can be EAC, WAC, LIN, SRC, NBC, MSC or IOE. Green cards issued before 1997 were sometimes referred to as “Alien Registration Receipt Cards” and they had the title “Resident Alien” across the top of the card. If you were issued a green card/permanent resident card (Form I-551) after May 10, 2010, you’d be able to find your number on the front, next to your picture. If you’re applying for a marriage green card from inside the United States, your Alien Registration Number will be included on the receipt notice you receive from USCIS after filing your green card application form.

  1. Your permanent resident card number is printed on the back side of the current edition of the permanent resident card (pictured above).
  2. To get an Alien Registration Number you must apply for certain immigration benefits or statuses.

  4. If your status changes during the year from resident alien to nonresident alien or vice versa, you generally have a dual-status tax year.
  5. If an A-Number has fewer than nine digits, applicants may also have to add a zero immediately after the A before entering the digits.

Most people are first given an Alien Registration Number when they apply for a green card. However, if you previously gained work authorization while in the United States on an F-1 student visa, you might already have been issued an A-number. This is most likely to be the case if you worked under the Optional Practical Training program after finishing your studies. The A-Number is a nine-digit number used by USCIS to track all immigrants applying for permanent status in the United States. The USCIS Online Account Number is only assigned if you choose to make an online account and serves as an additional way to help USCIS track your application.

A Card for the Next Generation (2017 –

Since these numbers are not the same, you need to know how to tell them apart. A USCIS Case Number is 13 characters — three letters (usually “EAD” or “MSC”), followed by 10 numbers. Once you have applied to be a permanent U.S. resident, your A-Number will be on almost all of the documents that USCIS sends you. On most paperwork, you should be able to find your A-Number labeled “A#” near the top of the page. Here are a few examples of some of the more common documents where you can find your A-Number. Reading a green card involves understanding the information presented on both the front and back sides.

History of the Green Card

If you are already a beneficiary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, then you have most likely been issued an A-number. If you’re filing to renew your DACA status, you will need the Alien Registration Number to fill out item 6 of Form I-821D, known as Consideration of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. You should be able to find your Alien Registration Number on the approval notice you received for the initial application. Like its recent predecessors, the current green card utilizes some enhanced security features.

Green Card Processes and Procedures

The front contains the cardholder’s photo, name, USCIS number (A-Number), date of birth, laser-engraved fingerprint, and card expiration date. In such cases, the card will indicate that the signature is waived. If you applied for your green card through consular processing (applied for green card at https://1investing.in/ a U.S. embassy or consulate), you probably had an Immigrant Data Summary stapled to the front of your immigrant visa package. You can find your A-Number at the top of the Immigrant Data Summary, as shown in the picture below. USCIS creates an Alien Registration Number for every permanent resident.

How do I get an Alien Registration Number (A-Number)?

The card regained its green coloring in May 2010 when USCIS released one of the most fraud-resistant versions to date. Since the last of these cards won’t expire until 2027, many of this edition continue to be in the hands of permanent residents. Also known as the Smith Act, the law did not discriminate between legal and illegal alien residents. All aliens had to register, and all received AR-3 documents before the 30-day mark. The permanent resident card number generally begins with three letters followed by a series of 10 numbers. However, your card number is different than your alien registration number (A-Number) and USCIS number.

Previous editions of the card continue to be valid for I-9 employment verification provided they are not expired. However, on a Permanent Resident Card, or Green Card, the resident alien card number A-Number will be listed as a USCIS#. This process is free, and you can learn about it on the USCIS website. USCIS assigns an A-Number to all immigrants who apply to live in the United States permanently. If you apply for a Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) or another type of Immigrant Visa, you will receive an Alien Number. The next three numbers represent the work day that the case was opened.

However, they lack some of the current security features, use different artwork, and may have data fields displayed in different places. As the desire to immigrate to the United States grew, so did the value of the green card. By the 1950s, INS was burdened with the problem of counterfeit green cards. To combat document fraud, the INS issued 17 different re-designs of the card between 1952 and 1977. Over the entire history of the green card, counterfeit cards have been a problem.

If green card is applied through consular processing, the immigration officer probably gave you a USCIS Immigrant Fee handout. Because residents and nonresident aliens are taxed differently, it’s important for you to determine your tax status. Some versions of the Notice of Action may contain the Alien Registration Number. In the I-797C (biometrics notice) below, the A-Number is located in the top/right of the document next to USCIS#. U.S.-born citizens and many nonimmigrant visitors do not have alien registration numbers.
